Up and Away!

April 21, 2010

I am in the midst of a pack-a-thon plowing through laundry, sorting and Tetris-ing my belongings. I leave in a week for a visit to Australia where my boyfriend, Graham, will be crossing the stage for his PhD. A proud moment I cannot miss!

Although the flight itself is impossibly long from New York to Sydney, I do have a fondness for the idea of travel, luggage, travel size things, and gadgets invented to make the whole experience even more exciting.

Here are a few adventure-inspired goodies from Etsy!

I love this little globe pendant by CuteAbility. I am the last person in the world you’d want to put in charge of navigation, but I do love the look of old globes and maps!

Large Kelly Green Leather Backpack by TheLeatherStore

Large Kelly Green Leather Backpack by TheLeatherStore

I’ve never been much of a purse person but as a tourist I think a good backpack is a must! Something to hold my cameras, umbrellas and travel essentials that holds me so I don’t have to hold IT. My travel packpack is an unfortunate little one shouldered black bag, but this kelly green leather is right up my alley! The shape and color is just beautiful. The inside lining is a fun floral print too!

I think this must be the most beautiful carry on or overnight bag. MaryKaiser makes a lot of really beautiful carpetbags but I am partial to this silky green coral!

False Hope

April 9, 2010

I have to pardon myself again for my absence this week. Thankfully, design work has been plentiful and I cannot complain. That doesn’t leave much room for blogging though!

I am sitting here bundled in sweaters watching, once again, as snow falls on the trees out my back window. It isn’t much but it’s sad to see when just yesterday I was enjoying the sun.

To keep my spring spirits high, here are some light spring fashions… soon, oh so soon I can wear my dresses and sandals!

Betty Dress Japanese Cotton by Christinapires

I love a good summer dress that’s easy to wear. I also love those pretty Japanese prints you see at the fabric store but I never know how to put them to use!

This could be so dressy or casual, either way perfect for a warm day by the water. It also comes in a really bright beautiful yellow.

These necklaces are really in style this year. I liked that this one isn’t too big…I can’t do too big or it makes me look even smaller. Good price too!

I can’t get enough of Kinies. They have a lot of really beautiful bags but I especially love this tote for market shopping.

Bare the cold weather folks, for how ever long it may last because the best time of the year is coming!

New Coloring Books!

Lions and Tigers Custom Coloring Book by Megnificent Made

I’ve sewn up a few new custom coloring book designs for the Megnificent Made store! In addition to this new animal print book, you can find whales, apples and pears in fun spring and summer colors.

Megnificent Made takes your photographs and turns them into coloring books. Then, they get packaged in these cute fabric folders that hold a set of crayons! They’re great for travel, keeping kids busy, and make great keepsakes.

Speaking of great keepsakes, now is the time of year many people are looking for unique ones. It’s Graduation time! Everyone loves a little coloring, no matter what age. Why not put together some memories for your graduate’s big day? It’s a unique twist on a scrapbook or photo board. Let friends add their mark on your memories at your graduation party!

The Fabric Florist

March 24, 2010

I recently got word from Australia that my last indoor potted plant died. It was a beautiful bunch of curly grass and it apparently went brown slowly over the last few weeks. Before that was a cactus that went squishy and a bonsai tree stuck in perpetual Autumn.

I love the life potted plants bring to a room but I can’t seem to keep them alive. There are some silk flowers out there that are reasonably believable although well out of my price range for a touch of life here and there in the apartment.

Here is another solution from Jane Joss, the Fabric Florist!

Sweet Potted Fabric Plants by Jane Joss

Sweet Potted Fabric Plants by Jane Joss

These beautiful little plants come in these little pots, or longer springs of leaves in vases. I love that she uses bright colorful fabrics in her leaves. They would be fun to switch out to match the seasons. What a great alternative for plant killers like me! Check out her fabric florals in her Etsy store.

Cold Shoulder

March 2, 2010

We just had another nasty snow storm in Upstate New York but I can’t help feeling that spring is on its way. I love the spring season because I love to mix and match summer wardrobe with warmer layers. Little jackets, capes, caplets, boleros and shrugs are so fun to mix and match with outfits. Here are a few to get you warmed up for spring!

ModestAmbition chose beautiful colors for this springy bolero. It looks so pretty and feminine and I’d love to see it with a flowy cream dress! ModestAmbition designs all of her patterns herself and has some really beautiful work. Check out her Etsy Store!

Blacka and White Stripped Bolero by Ananya

I just love this stripped bolero by Ananaya. I can see this with a bright, full skirted dress. It’s looks to be really well constructed and I like the care she put into the stripes. She has a lot of other really beautiful designs in her Etsy store…especially dresses! Ananaya is also willing to make custom apparel, so check her out.

Bustled Bolero by Toccata

Liza Rietz

February 27, 2010

This morning I stumbled on a designer from Portland, Oregon. She has been creating custom clothing since 2001 and has sold her designs to high-end boutiques in major cities across the US and even has her own shop in Portland. You can find her designs at her web page, lizarietz.com, or stop by her Etsy Store!

Her designs are unique and beautifully structured, and completely wearable! I really like that her clothing is made with clean natural fabrics, and the pow comes from unique silhouettes and structures and folds that are very unique and very well done.

Lovely Local

February 22, 2010

As I may have mentioned before I am living in Rochester, NY right now. It may not be the New York New York everyone in the rest of the world thinks of, but there is a whole lot of creativity in this city.

One example is my friend Kate, of KateMDot. I first heard of Kate’s lovely creations when she helped myself and our friend Teale with a creatively destructive project called “Trash the Dress.” Kate was very kind to make us a faux wedding dress to trash in the name of the art movement. The results were wonderful and I really appreciate her help with our fun day out.

Soaking it in

She was recently responsible for a repurposed fashion our friend wore for her wedding reception this year too.

you ought to give me wedding rings

Kate is on the right wearing a creation of her own, while the bride is on the left wearing her beautiful reception party dress!

I recently ran into Kate at the craft store picking out fabric for some new pieces in her etsy store and I thought I’d stop in and see what she’s been up to! Kate has been very busy with lots of new additions to her shop. Below are a few of my favorites.

Kate’s dresses, pants and tops are all made from recycled fashions. She does a beautiful job making them and makes a pretty good model too! Head over to Kate’s shop and check out more of her one of a kind, hand-made clothes!

Excuses Excuses

February 19, 2010

I don’t mean to be making excuses for my not-so-regular posting but lately I have been busy. I started this blog with not much going on and I wasn’t really sure how many people would follow, what kind of a commitment I should make, or what topics in general I should cover. I am surprised how many of you read, how much I actually enjoy blogging, and the things I discover while looking for topics. For the most part I have been pretty regular but the last few weeks haven’t been as blogful as I would like. I promise to change that!

One of the things that has been keeping me busy is a new job I have picked up two days a week while I am in New York. I am happily soaking up knowledge at Dixon Schwabl Integrated Marketing firm in Victor, New York. It is nice to be around creative people and in a very creative environment. They have a slide! They have also just this week started the massive job of re-painting the office with more bright and beautiful colors and patterns.

You can follow along on their blog here. It is mostly written by employees but also features an occasional guest blogger.

Another thing keeping me busy, as I have mentioned before, is all of my sewing. I have really gotten into making clothes and I do promise to photograph more this weekend. I have recently started to stray from patterns which is exciting and scary. It really makes me think more carefully before I start to cut. You can see in my last blog a purse I made that was completely pattern free. So brave of me!

I have also made a clutch version of the needle felted leather bag that I will be posting in the shop hopefully this weekend. I hesitate to photograph lately because I prefer to use natural light and we seem to be short on that here this time of year.

Speaking of posting to the shop, I added another camera wristlet to the Megnificent Made Etsy store!

Other things going on in my life…

I have been some what busy, and thankfully so, with some freelance design work. One of them I would like to share with you when it is appropriate is a set of greeting cards for a non-profit agency. I’m very proud of them!

I am also working on my residency application for Australia. Theres an awful lot of work involved. Yesterday I had my fingerprints taken as well as new passport photos to send with the application. I reeeeealllly wish this new photo could be my passport photo! It’s so much better than the horrible one I have now. But of corse, the photo that is going to sit in a folder somewhere tucked away would be the good one.

I promise to take some photos this weekend and hope the light is good.

Bowie

February 5, 2010

I recently started some work at an Ad Agency that is a long commute from home. I spent the drive today singing loudly to Bowie and for once actually enjoyed the ride.

Thanks Bowie.

In Bowie’s honor I thought I’d see what he had to offer on Etsy. I thought I’d collect a few things as usual, but then I saw this. This wins.

Kay’s K9’s

February 4, 2010

I stumbled across these incredible needle felted pet portraits on flickr yesterday and thought they deserved their own post.

These adorable miniature needle felted sculptures are by artist K. Stahler. She specializes in your traditional pets (dogs and cats!) but can also make custom rabbits, horses and other wildlife. They’re absolutely beautiful, itsy bitsy, and so detailed! What a special keepsake of your pet!

They are such tiny tiny works of art! And they genuinely look like these pups. I am so impressed with Kay’s K9’s. She even captured that corgie’s smile!

Check out her website at Kay’s K9’s for more samples of her work, and to see how you can get one of your own!
